  • About author:Dr. Ören is a professor emeritus of computer science at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Ottawa, Canada. He received his Ph.D. degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona, AZ in 1971 and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Istanbul in 1960.Dr. Örenhas over 500 publications and 45 books and proceedings. His research interests include advancing modeling and simulation methodologies; agent-directed simulation; agents for cognitive and emotive simulations; body of knowledge and taxonomies, etc. He is an SCS fellow (2016) and was inducted to SCS Modeling and Simulation Hall of Fame-Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and received SCS McLeod Founder’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession (2017). He had received the Distinguished Service Award and Distinguished Professional Award from the same learned society where he is also a distinguished lecturer.

Abstract: After a brief emphasis about the interconnected world, including Cyber-Physical Systems of Systems, the increasing importance of the decision-making by autonomous, quasi-autonomous, and autonomic systems is emphasised. Promising roles of computational understanding, computational awareness, and computational wisdom for better autonomous decision-making are outlined. The contributions of simulation-based approaches are listed.
